Meet the School Nurse:

Hi my name is Emma Barone, the students usually call me “Nurse Emma.” I started working here at Bluebonnet in the middle of the 21-22 school year. I am originally from Massachusetts and I attended the University of Massachusetts to obtain my bachelors degree in nursing. I’ve worked in a variety of hospital settings before starting my journey with Keller ISD as a school nurse. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding any of your students' medical needs.

Some Important Information:

Keller ISD follows guidelines set by the Texas Department of Health for communicable illness. Please keep your student home for the following conditions:

  • Temperature of 100 degrees or above
  • Vomiting or diarrhea (not caused by food intolerance)
  • Red, draining eyes
  • Presence of live lice in hair
  • Rash of undetermined cause
  • Open draining lesions
  • Undiagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp
  • Pain/swelling in the angle of the jaw
  • Jaundice
  • Suffering from a reportable illness defined by the Texas Department of Health

NOTE: Students observed with any of the above while at school will be sent home by the school nurse/ trained personnel. The state of Texas also requires students to be FEVER FREE for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications, before returning to school.

Health Screenings:

Hearing and Vision screening are mandated by the state of Texas for grades K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, as well as new students to the district. 5th grade girls will also be screened for scoliosis, opt-out forms will be sent out 2 weeks prior to the screening date. Students will also be assessed for Acanthosis Nigricans (AN), a pre-diabetes skin marker on the nape of the neck.

Medications at School:

  • Students must have a medical necessity for the medication at school.
  • Parents/Guardian must complete a medication authorization form (which can be found on the Keller ISD Health Services Website or in the nurse's office).
  • (NEW) Over the Counter medications now require a doctor's note or a signed KISD medication authorization form. This includes medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, allergy medications, cough medicine, cough drops, etc.).
  • Medicine must be brought by an adult, in the original container, indicate a child's dose, and not be expired.
  • Cough Drops are considered an over the counter medication per KISD, thus requiring a Medication Authorization Form.
  • Medication must be picked up by a parent at the end of the school year or it will be discarded. NO medication will be held over the summer.
  • Medications must be FDA approved, unfortunately no homeopathic medications can be given at school. - Students are NOT allowed to have inhalers or any other medication on them! ALL must be given to the school nurse.
